Previously, the 542d Crew Training Wing was a special operations training unit located at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. The 542d Crew Training Wing (542 CTW) was formed on 1 October 1991 to replace the 1550th Aircrew Training and Test Wing and 1606th Air Base Wing at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. The wing was responsible for training aircrews for rescue and special operations duties. With General Merrill McPeak's call to restore lineage to historic United States Air Force units, the 542d was deactivated on 1 April 1994, while the newly redesignated 58th Special Operations Wing took over the training mission.
